Tilda Rose is a Finnish-American illustrator who is based in Helsinki. Creating her artworks by hand using natural media such as gouache, acrylics and watercolors, her imagery has a wonderfully imaginative folksy, tactile and spontaneous feel to it. You can sense the passion of the artist behind it, and a strong desire to create.
Having grown up in Helsinki and Philadelphia, Tilda combines influences that come from the great tradition of American illustration – such as NC Wyeth and Norman Rockwell – with the mystical Finnish folklore of the Kalevala. Conceptual work is one of her great strengths, and clients love the way she presents multiple solutions to each brief, enabling them to hone their message within her aesthetic.
With an Illustration degree from the University of the Arts in Philadelphia, Tilda has trained across editorial, publishing, advertising, surface design and packaging and today works for a variety of international brands. With each project, she ensures the viewer can sense the physical creative process behind the imagery.
Approach
Tilda creates illustrations traditionally using gouache, acrylics and watercolors, with digital tools used to polish and enhance the finished work for an efficient process. “I like my illustrations to be as handmade as possible,” she says.Style
Tilda’s dreamlike surrealism is full of swirling motion, with naïve hints of Finnish folk art. She represents nature in unique ways – particularly fluid concepts such as water and wind. Color palettes are used to drive mood or challenge our perception of what’s real and what isn’t.Languages
