With an exciting style full of fun and vibrancy, Barcelona-based artist Iratxe Lopez de Munain uses colour to give her work its special character. She launched her creative career by writing and illustrating her own children’s book in 2010 and has gone on to produce excellent work for major publishing houses and creative agencies around the world.
Everything Iratxe creates has visual pop, and she’s inspired by colourful film directors like Paolo Sorrentino and Percy Adlon. Other influences include Henri Rousseau, the French modern artist Balthus, and the Naïve art movement. Iratxe has a Bachelor degree in Fine Art and Illustration from UPNA, Barcelona.
Approach
The first step in her process is to read the text she’s going to illustrate. Then Iratxe starts drawing in her sketchbook. “I like to create characters and find the right colours for each project,” she says. “For the final illustrations I use gouache and coloured pencils although sometimes I also use digital media, depending on the project.”
Style
Colourful, energetic, optimistic – Iratxe’s images have a touch of naïve fun about them. She enjoys drawing urban scenes and contemporary characters.
