Maps, portraits, seek & finds, editorial, patterns, animation – because of his versatile talents Mario Zucca works on all manner of projects. However, if there’s one thing this Philadelphia artist excels at it’s creating massively detailed environments where hundreds of different characters are all doing different things. You’ll stare and stare at one of his images, marveling at the sheer amount of activity.
Vastly experienced, Mario works for major publishers, broadcasters, agencies, corporations and even sports leagues around the world. He’s inspired by a love for travel, geography, typography, architecture, and sports, and that variety carries on into the people and environments he draws.
He has a BFA in Graphic Design from the Tyler School of Art, and an MFA in Illustration from the University of Hartford.
Approach
Digital, traditional – Mario's style varies depending on the assignment but often uses elements of both traditional and digital media. Sketching starts off digitally, where he can edit, scale and quickly combine elements to form his composition. Transferring to Bristol board, he fills out the image using a combination of pencil and tech pens before ultimately bringing the work back to the computer for colour and refining.Styles
Mario works in a diverse range of mainly comic-inspired styles – some graphic, and some more nuanced. His motto is ‘more is more’ and there’s a lot in every image.
