Going by the moniker ¡Zamora!, Paulo Zamora is an artist with a tremendously fresh visual language – striking and powerful in its simplicity, yet wonderfully tactile and immediate. The characters he creates demand your attention, while the texture makes you want to reach out and touch.
An accomplished graphic designer and creative director, Paulo has always harboured a passion for illustration. In the world of design, the style you work in changes from project to project, and for 16 years he searched for his own form of expression. Finally, it came to him.
His expressive characters hark back to the cartoons of the 40s and 50s, such as Felix the Cat, Popeye and Betty Boop, but are composed of simple geometric forms for graphical impact. Meanwhile, the finishing is sublime, with flecks of noise applied that afford depth and tactility. You can almost feel them, like speckles of spray paint on fresh sheet metal.
Originally from Bogotá, Colombia, Paulo now works out of São Paulo, Brazil. Clients love his ability to visualise their ideas in unique ways, making their projects stand out from the rest.
Approach
Each illustration begins in the sketchbook. Then, ¡Zamora! works digitally using Adobe Illustrator for his vector forms and Photoshop to generate depth and that sublime finish.Style
With hints of street art stencilling, vintage comics and bygone printing techniques, the ¡Zamora! style is nonetheless fresh, contemporary and truly unique, with black, white and one or two bright colours augmenting its impact.Languages
