Simon & Schuster commission Heedayah Lockman to illustrate a book jacket and spot illustrations for Laura Taylor Namey's new novel.
The bright cover sets the tone for a story that follows two Cuban teens in LA's Echo Park neighbourhood. Family, friendship and belonging are the themes touched upon as the characters clash over their visions for the future and the secrets between their families
Heedayah explains, "The inspiration came from the Cuban neighbourhood in Echo Park, Los Angeles, where murals are part of a strong identity both in real life and the story. The art director and the creative team of the publisher wanted to steer away from a typical Young Adult cover look, so they went with my sketch heavily influenced by the Cuban mural look."
The book will be released in August 2024 and is now available for pre-order here.
