If it’s furry, fluffy and cute you need, then South Korean illustrator Eunyoung Seo is the artist to work with. Kittens, bunnies, puppies, foxes, meerkats and more – her children’s book illustrations are filled with delightful little creatures that engross young readers and make them say, ‘Awwww!’
In a world where kittens lick ice creams and foxes visit museums, Eunyoung is like a Beatrix Potter for the modern era. Each illustration is charmingly executed with natural media like watercolours and sepia inks, in colours that give it a warm, cosy, nostalgic feeling. Clients in the publishing industry love not just Eunyoung’s style, but her collaborative and communicative approach.
Prior to becoming an illustrator, Eunyoung designed online games. Realising that her passion was to draw, she completed an MA in Illustration at the University of Edinburgh, where the colours, atmosphere and pockets of nature in the ancient city became her muse. She has become a children’s illustrator of note, writing and illustrating books like My Red Ball, and winning awards.
Approach
Her method begins drawing the linework in ink, painting over it in watercolour, then repeating the process to create images with depth and feeling. Sometimes she adds gouache and watercolour pencil to change the vibe, with colour editing done in Photoshop.Style
Eunyoung’s soft, sepia tones give her artwork an old-fashioned feel and a sense of childhood nostalgia. There is a warm, happy feeling in her characters – cute and gentle with lots of love to give.Languages
