Based in Manchester, Matthew Hollings is an illustrator known for his excellent portraiture and lifestyle imagery. The creative bug bit Matthew at a young age. One of his friends had a father who was a cartoonist and Matthew loved visiting the man’s studio and gazing at the racks of marker pens, water colours, prints and old Association of Illustrators contact books.
Today he’s inspired by a whole range of subjects, from politics to physics. In addition to his illustrative skills, he has a BSc in Engineering and loves mathematics. He enjoys listening to new music and seeing live bands, as well as running, playing football and snooker. Matthew’s current ambition is to visit California.
Matthew Hollings’ work bridges the divide between traditional draftsmanship and contemporary digital mark-making. Images initially start out as hand drawings before being scanned into the computer to be coloured and composed.
Influences are drawn from a range of subjects, often found in the content of his work. Matthew is equally as comfortable addressing mark-making challenges of portraiture to conceptual demands of narrative.
Matthew is a graduate of Camberwell College of Arts and currently lives and works in Manchester, UK.
