For illustrations with an engraved, etched or wood cut feel to them, Richard Phipps is the artist to work with. Vastly experienced, he’s worked with top agencies and global brands for decades, exceeding expectation whenever a project needs a bit of a vintage feel.
Richard worked in advertising and publishing early in his career, so he has a solid grasp of all the challenges his clients face. Outside illustration he’s interested in cycling, carpentry, masonry and restoring old buildings. Richard attended Harrow School of Art.
Approach
Pen and ink are Richard’s main media, alongside his engraving techniques. He used to apply colour washes in watercolour paints or ink but today this is done on his Mac.Style
Because of the engraved style that Richard recreates, his illustrations have a slight 19th century feel to them. His line work is strong, and he brings a lot of texture and detail into his images, which allow for greater realism and depth where needed.
