Pershore, Worcestershire, UK
The Worcestershire-based artist Philip Bannister paints his vivid watercolours in an immediate and instinctive style, which has helped him become one of the UK’s leaders in portraiture and architectural illustration. However, his vast experience in the field makes him a strong choice for nature, lifestyle, leisure and travel projects as well.
Born in Yorkshire, Philip grew up among the county’s heavy industries on the one hand, and its breath-taking natural beauty on the other. The silent moors, dales and fells, with their contrasting shades, inspired his boyhood drawings of 19th century battles. Even today, a strong interplay between light and shadow features in his watercolour illustrations.
After studying at the Batley College of Art, Philip worked in education, advertising and design before becoming a full-time artist in the 1980s, honing his style ever since. His inspiration comes from history, music, ghosts, poetry, the night sky, and more…
Approach
Philip works in watercolours, his wet brush hovering over the paper as he paints quickly, with spontaneity and joy.
Style
Philip has a distinctive watercolour style, but loves experimenting with the medium. Often working in monotones, he’s able to accentuate the contrast in his imagery while at the same time drawing out crucial details.Client list
Some of Philip’s clients include Daily Telegraph Magazine, Country Life, National Geographic, Condé Nast, Hilton Hotels, Waitrose, Mary Portas, BBC Music and The Folio Society.
