Nick joined the agency in July 2022 and, though his time with us was brief, he made a deep impression with all our agents, and all the clients he worked with.
Likewise, the artwork he produced made an impact with all who viewed it. His imagery came with style, with attitude, with humour – but above all it had a powerful message. Nick put the story of African Americans at the heart of each piece he created, presenting his own reflections on American culture. And he did so with passion.
“Nick was doing something unique with his work. It’s graphic and communicative, it is fine art and illustration. His artistic legacy and beacon will last and shine on and on,” said IllustrationX MD Harry Lyon-Smith in tribute.
Based in St Petersburg, Florida, Nick was diagnosed with a debilitating form of epilepsy in 2016. However, he refused to let the condition define him and thereafter devoted himself to his art – constantly drawing on the iPad given to him by his wife, Tiffany. His Black is Beautiful collection captured the imagination of people across America and around the world. It made Nick a significant figure in African American art, music and culture.
On 16 December 2022, he passed away following a seizure at the age of 31 – a tremendous loss and we send our deepest condolences to his wife Tiffany, his family and friends.
At IllustrationX, we are all shaken by the loss of this wonderful young talent, who had a huge heart and made such a positive impact with his work. Members of the IllustrationX family and clients have been in contact, praising the artist and expressing their sorrow.
Karen Kaller, our artist representative in New York, worked with Nick most. “Even though I only knew Nick for a year, he felt like a forever-friend who would do anything for you,” she said. “He was a talented artist who was kind, caring and lived life to the fullest. He was passionate about sending a message of positivity and hope through his art. Despite his health challenges, he was always smiling. His generous and gentle spirit will be missed by everyone who knew him. And his art will be a lasting reminder of the great man he was.”
Rest in peace, Nick Davis. You will always be remembered by your friends and colleagues at IllustrationX.
