Abubakari II

Abubakari II, sometimes known as Mansa Qu, ruled over the empire of Mali until he abdicated in 1311 in order to become a great explorer. Sue has created an arresting portrait of the historic character on a vintage map background hinting at his travels and adventures, she says, "It's thought by some that he and his fellow travellers may have even beaten Columbus to the Americas."
