Colombia’s Gold is its People

Gina Rosas Moncada is showcasing her first large canvas at an exhibition in Berlin, celebrating the 214th anniversary of Colombia's independence.

The exhibition, titled "Colombia's Gold is its People," is organised by the Embassy of Colombia in Germany in collaboration with the renowned artist Yadegar Asisi and his studio. This temporary exhibition features works by Colombian artists in Germany, with portraits on golden canvases symbolising contemporary Colombia's identity, diversity, and unity. Gina was selected through an open call to create one of the portraits for the exhibition.

Gina describes the inspiration for her piece, "I discovered Edilsa while watching one of the most beautiful Colombian documentaries I have ever seen, Los Hijos del Hielo. This documentary tells the sad yet inspiring story of our glaciers from different perspectives. I was captivated by her life story, her simple yet powerful and wise way of speaking. Edilsa is a woman who gives a voice to those who do not have one and inspires many of us to make a change. Edilsa Ibañez is a peasant and guardian of Colombia's snowy mountains. Her love for the glaciers was born when she was 10 years old, during her first visit to the Sierra Nevada of El Cocuy. For Edilsa, the mountain is a symbol of strength and life, a magical place that inspires her. This love led her to become a tourist guide and environmental interpreter. She fights against mass tourism and teaches how to protect the country's glaciers and snowy mountains, many of which have disappeared or are in danger. Her greatest wealth is looking out the window of her house and admiring the glacier she has climbed so many times."
