Zilveren Penseel

Marieke Nelissen receives the Zilveren Penseel - a Dutch award for best children's book of the year.

"I’m so proud and honored by this achievement!" says Marieke of the wonderful news. Delighted to receive the ‘Zilveren Penseel’ for her book ‘Ze Hadden Hun Schaapjes Geteld’ by author Benny Lindelauf, the book is about a girl who learns to become a shepherd like her brothers.

Only eight books in each category receive the Silver Brush, and in September one of these brushes will become gold! Well done Marieke, we are looking forward to more news later in the year.

The jury said of Marieke's work -

Nelissen wins a Silver Brush for her surprising and delicate drawings in the book ‘Ze hadden hun schaapjes geteld’ by Benny Lindelauf. This book is not only lifted to a very high level by the beautiful text, but also by Nelissen’s atmospheric, imaginative illustrations. Nelissen captures the story with subdued, but warm tones. The desert is soft pink and the starry sky alternates between dark blue and deep purple.
