Coney Island Dreaming

Sarah Beetson brings an exhibition of her bright and pop culture inspired art to Coney Island.

Inspired by her love for the iconic area, Sarah will be exhibiting a body of work which has been influenced by her many visits to Coney Island and which explores her love of it's history as America's playground.

Sarah has been regularly visiting Coney Island since 2002, taking influence from the flourish of tourists and locals that flood the area in the summer months, to enjoy the many amusements that the area has to offer.

Sarah comes to Coney Island in summer to snap polaroids and fill sketchbooks with drawings of all that she finds here, then returns to Australia to make paintings. She is fascinated by the colourful rides and vernacular signage to be seen offering every edible delicacy available from Surf Avenue to The Boardwalk. She has collaborated on art with local artists including photographer Laure Leber, Fashion Professor Jonathan Kyle Farmer and Sideshow Star Wendy Blades, and these works will be included in the exhibition.

Sarah tells us a bit about the opening night,

"Opening night was fantastic, it was so special to have Karen and Lauren, Jen Marravillas and Dena Cooper there, as well as many NYC and Coney Island artists and friends. I created a run of 45 silk scarfs featuring the work - as of Sunday there were just 13 left! My fab=vourite thing was that a lot of Coney locals bought the scarfs - a ride operator from the El Dorado Bumper Cars, whose slogan is a donkey yelling 'Bump Your Ass Off!", bought the scarf of this design and is wearing it at work!

Sarah's work will be on display in the lobby at Coney Island USA from August 7th through 19th. More information HERE
