Gail Armstrong illustrates the front cover and inside article for Pine - an online magazine of the North Arizona University.

This Spring issue focusses on the various eco projects around the university campus and how they are trying to build a general culture of sustainability.  Gail says "The cover image picks up on some of these - the wind turbines; the gardening and planting projects; the rent-free Yellow Bike Program; the recycling and composting programs - and the students taking part in them. It also features one of the most iconic building on the campus, 'Old Main' set amongst ponderosa pines and against a backdrop of the San Francisco Peaks." For the main article Gail was asked to create an opening image that featured some of the sustainability projects and events covered in the article. She continues "So I created a series of roundels that could be lifted out of the image and used as spot illustrations on the various pages. On the opening article I used layered paper in a ripple effect to imply that each of these projects link and together they spread throughout the university to help create the 'Culture of Sustainability'."
