With a loose, energetic style and an eye for retro fashion, Australian artist Rhea Isaacs fills her illustrations with joy… and a hint of attitude. Working under the moniker Young Earl Grey, she isn’t shy about using bubbly pink love hearts, loud 80s colour schemes, high belts or zany stripes.
Rhea moved to Paris in 2015 to merge with the European illustration scene, quickly finding a market among both edgy and established names in fashion, music and publishing. The music and films of the 1980s are some of her biggest influences – from Back to the Future to Michael Jackson and Eddie Van Halen. Meanwhile, her biggest artistic inspiration is Keith Haring because of the way his work bridged commercial and fine art.
Rhea studied animation and illustration, graduating with honours in Print Media from Sydney College of the Arts.
Approach
Drawing everything on her Wacom tablet, Rhea adds her bold colours in Photoshop then gives the piece a little grain for a tactile feel, bringing mood and nuance to the images with finely tuned cel-shaded shadows.
Style
Rhea’s style captures a bright and positive world where everybody wears chic clothes and cool sunglasses. She’s fascinated by the idea of capturing the magic of the 80s and 90s, and dialling it up.Client list
Young Earl Grey’s clients include Puma, Black Rainbow, Riton Time, Kah-Lo, High Snobriety and Pepe Jeans.
