London, New York, Barcelona and more – cityscapes around the world are brought to life in a colourful and character-filled style by English illustrator Mohan Ballard. His work has been compared to that of the great painter LS Lowry, which is a testament to his skills but there’s a lot more fun and colour in one of Mohan’s pieces.
With a passion for colourful architecture, Mohan loves finding vibrant and colourful buildings to fuel his inspiration. As well as Lowry, he’s a fan of fellow illustrator Johnny Hannah. Mohan has a degree in Illustration from Southampton University.
Approach
The first stage Mohan sources various photos of the setting he wants to create – if he can take them himself, all the better. Then he starts drawing in his signature style, painting in the colours using acrylics are Mohan’s favourite medium. His tones are meticulously planned, using contrasting colours and shading to the image pop. Finally, he applies a gloss coat for shine and scans the illustration for his client.
Style
Working traditionally with paints and a brush sets Mohan apart. While others use digital techniques, his work has a unique, handmade and slightly naïve feel to it. Vivid, packed with detail, and often a little abstract, each image is infused with energy and passion thanks to Mohan’s love of painting.Client list
Some of Mohan’s clients include Liberty London, Deezer, the Mr Men and Little Miss franchise, Lastminute.com and Veranique Zsa Fashion.
