With line work reminiscent of a fine graphic novel, energetic colouring and imaginative visual storytelling in each image he produces, Mike has a talent for capturing the chaos and nuance of modern life. Based in Edinburgh, he’s built a reputation among top drawer art directors because of his ability to reflect his client’s vision while bringing his own individuality to each project he tackles.
After graduating with first class honours in Painting from Grey’s School of Art in Aberdeen, Mike began his journey as a freelance illustrator over a decade ago and thanks to his experience in the industry displays an excellent understanding of how creative projects work across advertising, publishing, editorial and more. His creative influences go all the way back to his upbringing in Northern Scotland in the 1990s – skateboarding, snowboarding, Akira, Tank Girl, Alien, Castle in the Sky and Tomb Raider have all inspired him.
Approach
Mike works fully digitally, but draws by hand on his tablet, taking care to research each image thoroughly and giving it an authentic, natural feel.
Style
Because of his clean and proficient line work, people say Mike has a refined comic book style. However, his bright colour palette, the action and energy of his compositions and the detail he adds mean that each illustration grabs the viewer and holds their attention. Client list
Mike’s clients include Dr Martens, the BBC, Adidas, Vice, Noisey, Campaign Magazine, Shortlist Magazine, Soccer Bible, High Snobiety, The Skinny, Pinkbike, Brewdog and more.
