Fun-loving, whimsical and entertaining – animation and motion design by Dave Kiehl will reel you in with its easy-going vibe and jolly characters. From concept though to final execution, the Milwaukee-based animator knows just how to sprinkle the magic for a light-hearted effect that puts viewers at ease.
Growing up with a DIY creative ethic and a problem-solving attitude, Dave’s route into illustration and animation was through his interest in skateboarding and the aesthetic surrounding it. Now with a degree in Experimental Film from UW-Milwaukee and over 15 years of freelance experience under his belt, he has become the animator leading ad agencies, animation studios and brands turn to for engaging, imaginative motion work.
Reliable, efficient and eager to solve his clients’ creative problems, Dave loves exploring new ideas, conjuring amazing new worlds and populating them with long-legged creatures and characters, brought to life in layers of gorgeous texture and detail.
His influences include old Nickelodeon cartoons, Nintendo games and skateboard videos, and his work is imbued with the nostalgia they evoke.
Approach
Dave begins with rough sketches and explores various avenues, taking cues from the brief and by following his muse to eventually map out the overall composition. Using motion and colour, he guides the viewer into the narrative and appeals to their emotions.Styles
Dave works in a variety of visual styles to suit his clients’ briefs however his naïve and nostalgic illustrative aesthetic often shines through, adding charm to each project. “I always strive to get back to the imagination of a child and make my pieces more magical,” he explains.
