Oozing with personality and colour, Alex Cabal’s images capture beauty in a fun, contemporary and expressive way, and the artist can rarely resist adding a flower or two for a little flourish of nature.
Her style has a natural feel to it and although Alex likes drawing women of colour most, her projects include people of all races, backgrounds and genders. She knows the ropes from the client side as well, having worked on Clio-winning projects for a top advertising agency.
Born and raised in Los Angeles with a Filipino heritage, Alex is inspired by women street artists like Fafi, Miss Van and Koralie; the comic artist and illustrator James Jean; and strong female characters like Chun-Li from Streetfighter and Wednesday Addams.
Alex has a BFA in Digital Media from Otis College of Art and Design in Los Angeles.
Approach
Working in Photoshop, Alex sketches up her composition then blocks in the colours in rough shapes. The details are refined via the line work and in the final step textures are added and the colours are tweaked to get the contrast right.Styles
Colour, contrast, graphical lines, beauty, eye contact and flowers wherever possible are all hallmarks of Alex’s style. Portraiture is a specialty, although she works with almost any subject including the delicious renderings in her food range.Awards
